SACRAMENTO, Calif (AP) — California Governor Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, accused the Department of Justice of pursuing a politically driven investigation against him and his wife. Newsom, who has been a prominent critic of Republican President Donald Trump, suggested in a video posted on X that the federal investigation is targeting him as he considers a presidential candidacy.
Newsom stated that federal agents have contacted his associates and requested records. Although he did not specify the investigation’s focus, his office indicated it has recently extended to include personal aspects involving his family and professional relationships. He alleged the investigation is not only due to his outspoken criticism of Trump on social media but also his potential presidential aspirations.
The exact scope of the Department of Justice’s inquiries related to Newsom remains unclear. However, there are suspicions the Trump administration might be using the Justice Department to pursue political adversaries. A source with knowledge of the situation refuted the claim of a targeted probe against Newsom himself, instead revealing multiple investigations involving his associates. These include an investigation related to taxes associated with Newsom’s wife, which originated last year without input from Washington’s political leaders.
A separate investigation targets Newsom’s former chief of staff, Dana Williamson, who pleaded guilty in May to charges of conspiracy to commit bank fraud. This investigation, initiated under President Joe Biden’s administration, has broadened to encompass additional staff members. Newsom has not been implicated in any wrongdoing in connection to Williamson’s case.
The Justice Department and Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, during an interaction with Senator Chuck Grassley, declined to comment on the matter regarding Newsom. The Justice Department has faced previous accusations of investigating Trump’s adversaries, including former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James.
Commenting on the situation, Newsom expressed pride in joining those who have opposed Trump and faced investigations. Records have been subpoenaed, and agents have approached individuals connected to Newsom and his wife, according to his office, which argues the probe is pursuing nonexistent crimes. Jennifer Siebel Newsom, the governor’s wife, criticized Trump’s actions, declaring him unfit for office.
This investigation adds to a series of conflicts between Trump and California during his presidency. He has frequently targeted the state, including interventions concerning environmental measures, disaster aid, and policies on transgender athletes. In response, the state has often taken legal action against the federal government. Newsom has also led measures to challenge Republican efforts in other states, such as reinforcing Democratic representation in Congress through redistricting strategies.
