Cape Verde’s Historic Draw: Vozinha Shines in 2026 World Cup

Vozinha secured his legendary status long before the 2026 World Cup. Yet, outside of Cape Verde, few knew his name. The world became acquainted with him following the remarkable 0-0 draw against Spain. As the vice-captain and seasoned goalkeeper, Vozinha delivered an extraordinary performance, making seven crucial saves and providing a calming influence.

At age 40, Vozinha emerged as the oldest debutant for a team making its first World Cup appearance. His leadership was evident; his presence reassured teammates in tense moments. At the game’s conclusion, he shed tears, overwhelmed by emotion. Stopira, another venerable figure in Cape Verde football, was there to offer consolation, highlighting their deep connection.

Cape Verde’s success epitomizes the hard work of numerous contributors. The image of Vozinha and Stopira embracing stands as a symbol of their journey, with captain Ryan Mendes also a key figure. Vozinha expressed profound emotions post-match, reminiscing about his late grandparents, and mentioning his mother’s absence due to visa complications. The support of his family is deeply woven into his identity.

Named Josimar at birth, Vozinha’s father honored the Brazilian right-back from the 1986 World Cup. The nickname ‘Vozinha’, meaning ‘Granny’ in Creole, emerged from childhood experiences with older peers, who teased him when he sought comfort in his grandparents.

Initially overlooked for his size, Vozinha’s growth allowed him to pursue a football career in his late teens. He turned professional in his mid-20s, playing for Angolan club Progresso, and later teams in Cyprus, Slovakia, Moldova, and Portugal, currently with Chaves.

Debuting internationally in 2012, Vozinha, alongside Mendes, boasts the most appearances for Cape Verde. Despite missing recent AFCON qualifiers, he remained committed to his World Cup dream, motivated by teammates’ encouragement.

This striking result exemplifies the competitive spirit of smaller nations. Though Spain dominated possession, Vozinha’s skilled defense prevented them from scoring. This outcome is a testament to the potential competitiveness of lesser-known teams in international tournaments.

Following the game, Vozinha’s fame skyrocketed, with his Instagram followers surging from 50,000 to two million. For Vozinha and his teammates, this achievement constitutes their moment of glory. Reflecting on his path, Vozinha acknowledged the hard work and triumph of his 18-year-old self. The game stands as an affirmation that the journey was worthwhile.
