Gov. Pritzker Approves $56 Billion Illinois Budget Amid Federal Challenges

The spending plan will take effect on July 1, marking the last six months of Pritzker’s term as he seeks reelection. Discussions for a new Chicago Bears stadium remain unsettled. A typographical error identified by Democrats almost allocated an exaggerated sum, prompting Pritzker to veto over $500 billion in appropriations.
Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul expressed concern over a $10 million decrease in funding for his office. Despite legislative efforts against the Trump administration, Raoul emphasized the need for adequate investment. His office has been pivotal in legal battles, including blocking federal immigration enforcement missions.
Pritzker, acknowledging Raoul’s concerns, attributed reductions to alternative funding sources such as settlements. Republicans have criticized state spending, with House leader Tony McCombie blaming affordability issues on taxes while Pritzker defended the budget’s balance.
The $55.9 billion budget doesn’t raise standard tax rates but introduces new taxes and reactivates temporary rebates. These include a gas tax delay and a back-to-school sales tax holiday. Revenue effects from high gas prices and taxes on digital advertising and cryptocurrency are also incorporated.
Education funding increases by $350 million, reflecting a commitment to elementary and secondary schools. Support extends to safety-net hospitals and low-income residents facing new federal SNAP requirements, offering $400 payments to those affected.
