Avery Miller’s Commitment to Improvement
Avery Miller, a pitcher for Naperville Central, already stood out as a strong player. Determined to enhance her physical and fundamental skills, she focused on an intense training regimen as she prepared for her junior season. ‘I hit the gym more,’ Miller shared. ‘I did last year, but I decided to do it more this year.’ Her efforts included visiting the gym at least four times a week, supplementing with other lessons, and practicing in her garage when extra time allowed.
Training Pays Off
Miller’s dedication resulted in her earning the 2026 Naperville Sun Softball Player of the Year award. Her performance as both a pitcher and a hitter significantly improved. She completed her third varsity season with an impressive 19-6 record, three saves, and a 1.82 ERA. She struck out 213 batters over 161 2/3 innings and recorded seven shutouts. Her achievements as the DuPage Valley Conference pitcher of the year were underlined by her 13-0 league record, contributing to the Redhawks’ second straight DVC title with a 25-10 overall record and 15-0 in conference play.
Increased Plate Power
Miller’s enhanced strength also benefited her batting performance. As an all-state second-team selection, she batted .392, with seven doubles and a team-leading nine home runs, sharing 34 RBIs with sophomore Lacie Williams. ‘She had some good stats as a sophomore, but she came back as a much better player,’ remarked Naperville Central coach Andy Nussbaum. Nussbaum noted her improved ability to hit extra-base hits and home runs in crucial situations.
Key Contributions and Achievements
One memorable home run was a walk-off two-run shot against St. Charles East on May 8. Miller attributed her increased power to better muscle training. She acknowledged overcoming a slump from the previous year and felt encouraged by her progress.
Pitching Improvements
Coach Nussbaum observed significant enhancements in Miller’s pitching, including fewer walks and more strikeouts, coupled with improved defense behind her. He highlighted her mental toughness, particularly in challenging situations where opponents left many runners on base.
Team Success and Leadership
The Redhawks improved by five more wins compared to 2025, securing their first regional title since 2015. Initially doubtful due to the loss of seniors, Miller expressed pride in the team’s unity and achievements. Senior shortstop Natalie Lau, a Penn commit, emphasized Miller’s role in the team’s success. ‘She’s definitely a leader in our energy and team chemistry because we can all really rally behind her,’ Lau said. ‘She’s very reliable, so it’s really great to see her succeed, especially over the last three years.’ Lau praised Miller as one of the best teammates, appreciating the opportunity to share a final season with her.
