Haley Stevens Supports Former Opponent Abdul El-Sayed
Michigan Congresswoman Haley Stevens discussed her decision to support Abdul El-Sayed, her former primary opponent, after a narrow defeat in the state’s Democratic primary. During an interview on ‘America’s Newsroom,’ Stevens addressed the party’s progressive movement, the rise of socialist policies, and the challenge of uniting the Democratic base before the upcoming general elections.
Stevens emphasized the importance of democracy, stating, “That’s called democracy.” She expressed that holding grudges is not beneficial within the Democratic Party. Despite her endorsement, she maintained her distinctive political identity, which differs from El-Sayed’s.
Stevens’ Political Stance
Retiring Senator Gary Peters, who previously remained neutral during the primary, decided to support Stevens as Democratic leaders aim to prevent El-Sayed from securing the nomination. Stevens is recognized as a moderate Democrat, contrasting with El-Sayed on various issues, including U.S.-Israel relations and the Democratic Party’s direction.
Stevens referred to herself as a “Zionist Democrat” and continued to advocate for her political beliefs. Despite her electoral defeat, she voiced confidence in her principles and the democratic process by acknowledging El-Sayed’s victory.
The Progressive Flank
Abdul El-Sayed has emerged as a significant figure within the party’s progressive wing. Despite rejecting the socialist label, he supports several policies associated with the progressive movement, such as abolishing ICE, ending U.S. military aid to Israel, and establishing Medicare for all.
Stevens clearly differentiated between her views and socialism, pointing out El-Sayed’s disavowal of the socialist label. She identified as a “proud Democratic labor capitalist” and made this a central theme of her campaign.
