Veteran Fights to Halt Wife’s Deportation

Retired Staff Sergeant Wilmer Trujillo, who served approximately 20 years in the U.S. Army and Texas National Guard, now faces a personal crisis. In Princeton, Texas, he is urging the government to halt the deportation of his wife, Arelys Barahona-Martinez. Trujillo shared, “It breaks me because the country I worked my entire life for is ripping my family apart.”

Barahona-Martinez, a Honduran native, was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) during a routine check-in. Despite having no criminal record, she faces deportation due to past illegal entries into the U.S. and a deportation order from 2005.

Trujillo’s wife was arrested in Dallas and is currently held in Alvarado, Texas. Speaking through a video call, she expressed, “It is truly hell, to be judged as a criminal. The only thing I’m asking them is for them to let me be with my family.”

Barahona-Martinez might qualify for a green card through her marriage, but this requires an immigration judge to reopen her case. She needs to convince officials to cancel her illegal entries via the parole-in-place program, which supports military families. It remains uncertain if ICE will permit her to pursue the process outside of detention.

Barahona-Martinez returned to the U.S. in 2018, driven by her son Idben’s needs. Facing recruitment by gangs and suffering from neurofibromatosis, a disorder causing tumors, her son required urgent medical care. Idben, now 20 and living with Trujillo, says their home feels “empty” without his mother, explaining, “She came to this country just to save my life.”

This situation emphasizes the Trump administration’s stringent deportation policies, often affecting families of U.S. veterans. Those with deportation orders, like Barahona-Martinez, are prioritized for arrest, regardless of criminal history, complicating their release during proceedings.
