A Russian warship fired warning shots near a UK-registered yacht in the English Channel on Tuesday. The incident led to no damage but highlighted increasing tensions between the two nations.
Britain’s Defense Ministry began an investigation after the yacht, located around 20 nautical miles, or 23 miles (37 kilometers), south of the Isle of Wight, reported the encounter. Notably, this occurred outside UK territorial waters. Fortunately, there were no injuries or damage recorded, and the yacht proceeded on its course from the UK toward France.
The yacht, lacking a motor, reportedly veered toward the Russian ship due to foggy conditions. According to Russia’s Defense Ministry, the crew of the frigate Admiral Grigorovich noticed the yacht on a risky trajectory near their warship. Despite efforts to communicate with the yacht using flares and sound signals, there was no response. When the vessel was just 150 meters (500 feet) away, the frigate’s commander opted to issue warning shots across the yacht’s bow, prompting it to change its course.
Both nations presented similar accounts of the situation. Britain’s Defense Ministry stated that the warning shots were not aimed at the yacht but intended to prevent a collision. The Royal Navy routinely monitors Russian warships passing through the English Channel, and the patrol vessel HMS Mersey was overseeing the Russian ship during this incident, offering aid to the yacht’s crew.
Recently, the British military tracked the Admiral Grigorovich in April alongside six civilian vessels linked to Russia near the UK.
This incident came shortly after British commandos seized a sanctioned tanker in the Channel, allegedly part of Russia’s shadow fleet. British officials do not believe these events are related. The tanker’s captain, accused of transporting Russian oil against international sanctions, was detained after a court appearance.
The British military has confronted Russian vessels in the region multiple times, issuing a warning to Moscow last November regarding any territorial incursions. In April, British and Norwegian forces tracked Russian submarines operating north of the UK, preventing any harmful activities against infrastructure.
Five years ago, Russia reported using live ammunition to deter the British destroyer HMS Defender in the Black Sea, claiming it was near Russian-claimed waters. The UK denied the vessel was targeted by gunfire, marking a significant military tension post-Cold War. This situation unfolded about half a year prior to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
