Just days before Serena Williams confirmed her return to tennis, Coco Gauff spoke about the possibility at Roland-Garros.
“That would be really cool,” said Gauff, 22. “I did say one of my biggest regrets was not being able to play her. Everybody’s been hearing rumors, so if they are true, we’ll find out soon. We’ll see. But having a legend back playing would be crucial for the sport.”
Williams, 44, is not interested in playing singles against Gauff. Instead, she expressed her desire to partner with Gauff in doubles. “I would really love to play with Coco,” Williams mentioned after a match at the Berlin Tennis Open where she teamed up with Karolina Muchova. “She was on my list of players I’d love to team up with. I didn’t know. She’s very focused on singles, but I should have asked.”
Williams recently played her first professional match since the 2022 US Open, teaming up with Victoria Mboko for a doubles match at the HSBC Championships in London. Their journey ended early due to Mboko’s knee injury. Williams then moved her focus to Berlin and it was announced that she and her sister, Venus Williams, will play doubles at Wimbledon.
With 23 Grand Slam singles titles, Williams holds the record for the most in the Open Era. Alongside Venus, she has secured 14 doubles titles, six of which were at Wimbledon.
