Conservationist Mona Khalil’s Legacy and Tragic Demise

For a quarter of a century, Mona Khalil dedicated herself to protecting endangered sea turtles on the beaches near Tyre, Lebanon. Her commitment went beyond conservation. She ran a guesthouse nearby and worked tirelessly to shield the turtles’ eggs and young hatchlings from predators.

Khalil’s efforts earned her respect within the conservation community. She worked to bring together various interests, often at odds, to support the turtles’ plight. Her mission remained steadfast despite the tumultuous environment in southern Lebanon, frequently affected by conflict.

In early June, Khalil was caught in the crossfire of the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah. An airstrike left her wounded, and she later died from her injuries at the American University of Beirut Medical Center, as confirmed by her friend, Fadia Jomaa.

Khalil’s sister, Amal, described her as a multifaceted individual who was both tough and compassionate. Amal expressed anger over her sister’s loss, highlighting the personal and broader tragedy of the conflict that has claimed over 4,000 lives.

Mona Khalil’s life began in Lagos, Nigeria, though she was born to Lebanese parents. Her journey took her to the Netherlands, where she spent many years working as a porcelain restorer before dedicating her life to conservation efforts in Lebanon.
