Teen Convicted of Fatal Stabbing at Texas High School Track Meet

Recently released video footage from a police officer’s body camera and a surveillance camera at a Texas running track captures the aftermath of a tragic incident during a high school meet last year. The footage shows events following a fatal stabbing where a teenage athlete killed another teen from a competing team.

Karmelo Anthony, 19, was convicted of murder on June 10 for the killing of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf. He received a sentence of 35 years in prison. Anthony’s claims of self-defense were dismissed by the jury. The video evidence, released by the Collin County court after the trial, is now public.

The surveillance footage presents a rainy day at the track and bleachers. Suddenly, an individual in a gray sweatshirt appears from a yellow tent and runs down the bleachers. The video does not include audio. The figure trips, falls, then continues running alongside the fencing that separates the bleachers from the track. The person stops, glances back as if someone is pursuing him, and resumes running. Eventually, he joins an unidentified person. They converse briefly and embrace. A second person joins them, and after a short conversation, Anthony approaches a police officer by the fence.

The officer handcuffs Anthony and escorts him towards a police cruiser. Anthony complies with the officer’s instructions and begins to cry, stating, “He put his hands on me. I told him not to. He put his hands on me.” The officers guide him to the cruiser and place him inside.
