The Japanese national football team has moved closer to the knockout stages at the World Cup, following a decisive 4-0 victory over Tunisia in Group F. This result marks the fourth consecutive time Japan could reach the knockout stages of the tournament.
Japan’s four goals against Tunisia represent the highest tally they have ever achieved in a World Cup match. Ayase Ueda played a pivotal role by scoring twice, while Daichi Kamada and Junya Itō each contributed one goal. These goals helped Japan match the Netherlands with four points in the group, though the Dutch currently lead due to having scored one more goal overall.
Tunisia has been eliminated from the tournament following this loss. Japan is guaranteed third place in the group, which may be sufficient for qualification to the knockout stages.
Ayase Ueda’s header in the 83rd minute secured Japan’s fourth goal. Earlier, Kamada had opened the scoring within the first four minutes, the swiftest in Japan’s World Cup history. Keito Nakamura set up Kamada perfectly for an easy tap-in, marking Kamada’s second goal in the tournament.
In the 31st minute, Ueda advanced towards the Tunisia penalty area with possession. Choosing to shoot rather than pass, Ueda delivered an impressive angled shot from outside the box into the goal, increasing Japan’s lead to 2-0. Ueda, who plays for Feyenoord, enjoyed an outstanding club season, leading the Eredivisie with 24 goals.
For the third goal, Junya Itō capitalized on a flick from Ueda, facing Tunisia’s goalkeeper Aymen Dahmen in a one-on-one situation and finishing decisively. Ueda’s second goal came with his masterful header later in the match.
Japan, yet to lose to a European team in standard play since 2019, is set to face Sweden in Dallas on Thursday. Meanwhile, Tunisia will compete against the Netherlands in Kansas City.
