Small Vineyard Flourishes Amid Pandemic Challenges in South Africa

In the midst of the global COVID-19 pandemic, many people found themselves confined, including Natasha Jacka. During the lockdown in 2020, she found an opportunity in her family garden in Cape Town, South Africa. Jacka decided to bring her dream of becoming a winemaker to life.

She planted her own vineyard, transforming her parents’ backyard into a productive space. Despite the slow progress inherent to winemaking, her efforts bore fruit four years later. The wines from her first harvest received high praise from wine critics.

Jacka voiced relief at the success, stating, “It could have been so much work and if it doesn’t deliver, you know, then you just feel … I wasn’t looking at it like, ‘oh this is going to make a fortune.’ This is a labor of love.”

Christian Eedes, a respected wine reviewer, commented on her endeavor as “a triumph of hope over good sense,” emphasizing the difficulties of producing quality wine on a small scale.

Jacka managed to fit 1,400 vines into two garden blocks, producing a white blend and a syrah red wine varietal. Although considerably smaller than regular farms that boast over 50,000 vines, her effort embodied craft and care.

Her journey into winemaking began when her passion led her to study viticulture in Stellenbosch. However, her ambitions were abruptly slowed by the pandemic.

During quarantine, inspiration struck as Jacka envisioned vines outside her window. This idea drove her to mobilize her family to prepare the land, plant vines, and tackle challenges, including the loss of some vines to Spirit, the family horse.

Her micro-vineyard in Noordhoek has fueled her commitment to winemaking. Under the Alinea label, Jacka’s repertoire has expanded to include wines sourced from around Cape Town.

Eedes remarked, “She managed to not be bored, like we all were. It’s really just an extraordinary undertaking.”
