The latest installment of the beloved Pixar series, ‘Toy Story 5,’ has made a spectacular debut at the box office, achieving $160 million in domestic sales during its opening weekend. This accomplishment sets a new record for the franchise and marks the largest opening weekend of the year.
Released 31 years after the original ‘Toy Story,’ the fifth chapter in the animated series has greatly exceeded the previous series record. ‘Toy Story 4’ had a debut of $120 million when it premiered in 2019. International figures for ‘Toy Story 5’ are equally impressive, with sales totaling $152 million, bringing the global total to $312 million.
With the debut of ‘Toy Story 5,’ the franchise remains highly profitable for The Walt Disney Co. Before its release, the previous films had collectively generated over $3 billion in box office revenue and billions more from merchandising. Despite concluding with ‘Toy Story 3’ in 2010, rejuvenating the series has proven economically advantageous.
‘Toy Story 4’ grossed over $1 billion in sales, and ‘Toy Story 5’ is poised to follow suit. Among animated films, only ‘Incredibles 2’ from 2018 had a larger opening weekend, earning $182.7 million.
Maintaining the ‘Toy Story’ franchise is becoming progressively costly. The fifth movie required $250 million to produce, excluding marketing expenses. The film features an all-star voice cast including Tom Hanks as Woody, Tim Allen as Buzz Lightyear, and Joan Cusack as Jessie.
The new sequel showcases a modern twist where the toys face neglect when Bonnie receives a new tablet. Directed by Andrew Stanton, known for ‘Finding Nemo’ and ‘WALL-E,’ the movie incorporates a fresh song by Taylor Swift titled ‘I Knew It, I Knew You.’
Critics have responded favorably, and audiences awarded the film an ‘A’ CinemaScore, indicating strong staying power in theaters.
In other movie weekend news, Steven Spielberg’s ‘Disclosure Day’ has dropped to second place with $17 million in its second week. The decline of 61% from its opening weekend indicates potential challenges for the sci-fi thriller, despite its $160.4 million worldwide gross.
‘Disclosure Day’ might continue to attract adult audiences, but faced tough competition from animated hits.
A24’s ‘The Death of Robin Hood’ underperformed with $2.6 million in sales. The film, starring Hugh Jackman and directed by Michael Sarnoski, garnered mixed reviews and a ‘C+’ CinemaScore.
Neon’s ‘Leviticus’ fared slightly better, grossing $2.7 million in its debut weekend. The indie horror film achieved positive word-of-mouth despite stiff competition from ongoing horror successes like ‘Obsession.’
The horror film ‘Obsession,’ directed by Curry Barker, continued to dominate, adding $14.2 million to its earnings. With a modest production budget, ‘Obsession’ has achieved impressive domestic and global totals, proving the strength of horror films in the market.
Overall, the summer box office has seen a significant increase, up 15% compared to summer 2025. Ticket sales are nearly matching those from the summer of 2019. Market analyst Paul Dergarabedian foresees a successful summer season for Hollywood.
Final domestic box office rankings for the weekend are as follows:
- ‘Toy Story 5,’ $160 million.
- ‘Disclosure Day,’ $17 million.
- ‘Obsession,’ $14.2 million.
- ‘Backrooms,’ $7.3 million.
- ‘Scary Movie,’ $6.7 million.
- ‘Masters of the Universe,’ $5.6 million.
- ‘Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu,’ $3.9 million.
- ‘Leviticus,’ $2.7 million.
- ‘The Death of Robin Hood,’ $2.6 million.
- ‘Michael,’ $2.2 million.
