Wyndham Clark faced a hostile reception from the Shinnecock Hills crowd during the U.S. Open. Many fans openly rooted against him, hoping his shots would end up in the bunker or rough. One spectator was even removed for shouting, “Don’t choke, Wyndham!” Despite this, Clark secured his second U.S. Open title within four years. His six-stroke lead had been reduced to just one, but he held on with a crucial putt.
While New York appreciates winners, this crowd preferred to cheer for Scottie Scheffler, who was pursuing the career Grand Slam, or Sam Burns, who narrowly missed victory. Clark became unpopular with fans due to past incidents, such as damaging a locker in frustration at Oakmont Country Club last year and remarks made during the Masters Par 3 Contest.
“Man, they definitely didn’t want me to win,” Clark said.
Throughout the tournament, Clark sensed the crowd’s animosity. On Saturday, he noticed fewer fans watching him finish his third round. On Sunday, the hostility intensified. While he tried to embrace the ‘underdog’ role, he struggled early, bogeying the second, sixth, and seventh holes amid fans cheering his mistakes.
Clark faced repetitive jeers, such as when he hit a shot under trash containers or made a poor landing in a bunker. A fan’s comment, “Wyndham gonna lose ‘em,” followed him as he played the tenth hole. Despite these challenges, he managed to momentarily win over some of the crowd on the 16th hole with a notable birdie putt.
Nevertheless, the taunts resumed on the 17th hole when he missed a vital par putt. Clark remained resolved as he headed for the 18th tee, amidst ongoing heckling. After his victory, Clark expressed pride in overcoming the difficult circumstances, stating that his main aim was to win, regardless of the margin.
