Netflix has announced a new venture into the popular “Hot Ones” series. The streaming service has ordered a spinoff titled “Hot Ones: Extra Heat.” This follows the format of the YouTube hit where celebrities are interviewed while eating spicy chicken wings.
Scheduled to air after major live events and special premieres, the first episode of “Hot Ones: Extra Heat” will be available on July 13. It coincides with the streaming of the Home Run Derby, part of Major League Baseball’s All-Star competition.
This move marks another chapter in Netflix’s rivalry with YouTube. According to Nielsen, YouTube remains the leading streaming service on American TVs, with Netflix following. In recent years, Netflix has collaborated with YouTube creators, including Ms. Rachel and science educator Mark Rober.
Host Sean Evans assured fans that the essence of the original “Hot Ones” will remain in the new show. Regular episodes will continue on YouTube. “Hot Ones: Extra Heat” will still feature celebrity guests enduring progressively hotter wings in episodes lasting around 30 minutes.
However, the Netflix series will benefit from a larger budget. This upgrade allows for more elaborate settings than the usual black curtain backdrop seen in the original. The first show will take place in a college baseball stadium, adding to the spectacle.
