Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell will not participate in Senate voting this week, continuing his recovery after an undisclosed hospitalization. His office released this information on Monday.
The 84-year-old Republican was admitted to a hospital on Sunday, June 14, 2026. While his staff has assured he is receiving excellent care, the specifics of his medical condition remain private.
Despite missing crucial budget votes, McConnell’s office highlights his continued involvement in legislative affairs. His staff is following his directives on both federal matters and initiatives for Kentucky.
“Senator McConnell is still working closely with staff on Senate business and Kentucky matters as he continues his recovery. However, he will not be voting this week,” the statement said.
His absence occurs even as Republican leadership initially hoped for his prompt return. Senate Majority Leader John Thune noted McConnell “sounded good,” remaining engaged with legislative developments. Fellow Kentucky Senator Rand Paul confirmed McConnell’s improved condition, although he has not spoken directly with him.
McConnell’s recent health challenges add to those faced over the years. In February, he was hospitalized for “flu-like symptoms.” His public appearances have occasionally revealed physical strain, such as a heavily bandaged hand in May. In 2023, McConnell had a major hospitalization for a concussion and fractured rib from a fall, followed by brief freezing episodes during press conferences.
His current recovery aligns with a crucial period for the long-serving Senator. McConnell, who led Senate Republicans from 2007 to 2025, announced his retirement at the end of his seventh term in January 2027.
