Weather Challenges at MetLife Stadium During World Cup Match
Norway’s match against Senegal took place at MetLife Stadium despite earlier heavy rain. This venue is located in East Rutherford, New Jersey. In contrast, France’s match against Iraq, about 100 miles away in Philadelphia, faced a 2-hour delay due to rain and thunderstorms.
The U.S. National Weather Service issued a flood watch for areas including Bergen County, where MetLife Stadium is situated. Water was observed on roads leading to the stadium hours before the kickoff. However, by the time the game began at 8 p.m. EDT, the rain had stopped.
“Showers and potential thunderstorms with high amounts of moisture are expected to move through the area this afternoon and tonight,” the NWS stated.
FIFA regulations do not specify weather conditions that could delay or interrupt matches. The organization has confirmed that they will monitor real-time conditions and collaborate with host governments and medical experts if severe weather threatens games.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani advised attendees to travel to the stadium ahead of time, emphasizing the unpredictability of severe weather. A travel advisory was issued by New York City Emergency Management to urge caution during travel amid potential severe conditions.
MetLife Stadium, hosting this match, is an open-air venue built in 2010. It accommodates around 80,000 attendees and was constructed on steel pilings in New Jersey’s marshlands.
Weather issues were also notable during last year’s Club World Cup in the U.S., where six games faced delays totaling 8 hours and 29 minutes. Similarly, matches in Orlando and Austin earlier this year encountered interruptions due to storms.
According to World Cup regulations, if an interrupted match restarts, it will continue from the minute it was paused with the score intact. The exact restart conditions, such as a drop ball or corner kick position, depend on when the interruption occurred.
Additionally, FIFA holds the authority to cancel, reschedule, or relocate any matches for reasons including severe weather or safety concerns.
