Erling Haaland has been a standout player in Norway’s 2026 World Cup matches. He continues to impress as Norway faced Senegal in a key Group I contest.
In the first half, Marcus Holmgren Pedersen took to the field as a substitute and scored the opening goal at the 43rd minute. His impressive kick bypassed the Senegal goalkeeper, giving Norway a 1-0 lead.
Haaland added to the scoreline in the second half, netting a goal three minutes in and another at the 58th minute. He has now scored two goals in two consecutive matches.
Senegal sought to equalize late in the game, trailing by a single goal. Despite their efforts to draw level, they were defeated 3-2 by the Norwegian side.
With this victory, Norway secured a place in the Knockout Phase. The team is thrilled with their World Cup journey. Their upcoming game against France, led by Kylian Mbappe, will decide the group winner.
Following the match, Haaland spoke to Fox Sports. “We managed to get through, which is incredible, so I couldn’t care too much about that game now … they’re probably going to win against us, they’re probably going to win the whole tournament,” he remarked.
His comments suggest skepticism about Norway’s chances to win the World Cup. This acknowledgment of France’s strength could be seen as lacking confidence in his own team.
This tournament marks Haaland’s first World Cup participation, and his debut has been remarkable. In the opening game, he scored twice in Norway’s 4-1 triumph over Iraq. Known for his performances with Manchester City since 2022, Haaland is emerging as a leading figure in the tournament, alongside Spain’s Lamine Yamal.
The clash with France is highly anticipated. Haaland’s remarks have fueled speculation about Norway’s strategy regarding winning Group I or conserving energy for the Round of 32.
