Algeria aims to secure a place in the knockout stage with a win against Austria on Saturday. In a thrilling World Cup 2026 Group J match, Amine Gouiri celebrated his team’s second goal as Algeria defeated Jordan 2-1. The match took place at the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium in Santa Clara, California, on June 22, 2026.
Algeria’s success came from two crucial second-half goals. After falling behind early, Nadhir Benbouali, a second-half substitute, equalized with a header from a corner kick in the 69th minute. Amine Gouiri then delivered the game-winning goal in the 82nd minute. This victory marked Algeria’s first World Cup win since 2014.
Jordan took an early lead with a goal by Nizar Al Rashdan. However, Algeria’s relentless pressure in the second half turned the tide. The victory also marked the first time Algeria won a World Cup match after conceding the opening goal, having previously recorded seven losses and two draws in similar situations.
Having bounced back from a 3-0 defeat to Argentina in their opening game, Algeria can now advance to the knockout round with a win against Austria. On the other hand, Jordan has been eliminated from knockout contention following their second consecutive loss. The team had started with a 3-1 loss to Austria in their World Cup debut.
Benbouali’s equalizing goal shifted the momentum when Riyad Mahrez’s corner kick found him at the center of the box. His header went into the corner of the net, beyond the reach of goalkeeper Yazeed Abulaila. Gouiri then sealed the win for Algeria by deflecting a ball off Abulaila and into the net, prompting celebrations among Algerian fans at Levi’s Stadium.
