North Korean leader Kim Jong Un announced plans for a significant expansion of the country’s naval capabilities. Kim proposed constructing two large warships each year for the next five years, according to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).
During a commissioning ceremony for a new destroyer at Nampho port, Kim highlighted the need for vessels similar in size to the 5,000-ton Choe Hyon-class destroyer. The recent deployment of this multipurpose destroyer marks a key milestone. Kim observed the vessel successfully launching two cruise missiles and three anti-ship missiles earlier this year.
The destroyer has completed military operational tests over the last 14 months,
KCNA reported, showcasing its capability.
Strengthening North Korea’s Naval Forces
The development of the Choe Hyon represents a significant advancement toward broadening North Korea’s military reach. Kim emphasized the navy’s nuclearization is progressing, enhancing the country’s nuclear deterrence.
The naval buildup aims to bolster one of the identified weaker sectors of North Korea’s military by experts.
Strategic Warship Developments
Kim announced plans to deploy an additional 5,000-ton destroyer, the Kang Kon, and larger strategic 10,000-ton warships. Initially unveiled last year, the Kang Kon experienced a setback during a launch at Chongjin but has been repaired and relaunched.
Kim asserted that North Korea’s naval capabilities would soon be something incredible,
according to KCNA, with images of a developing nuclear-powered submarine further supporting this claim.
Building Modern Naval Infrastructure
Kim reiterated the urgency of constructing modernized naval bases to support expanded operations. Plans are under review for new bases, as reported by state media.
Speaking at the Workers’ Party’s Central Committee meeting, Kim noted upcoming changes to the navy’s status, role, and scope of operations. Specific details on these changes were not disclosed.
Reports from Fox News Digital and Reuters highlighted Kim’s strategic naval ambitions.
