Keiko Fujimori Leads the Runoff Election in Peru

As of Tuesday, right-wing presidential candidate Keiko Fujimori holds a significant lead in the Peruvian presidential runoff election, according to official sources. With 99.86 percent of ballots counted, Fujimori garners 50.12 percent of the vote. This gives her a margin of over 43,000 votes compared to her leftist opponent Roberto Sanchez, based on data released by the National Office of Electoral Processes.

The remaining uncounted 131 tally sheets equate to about 39,000 votes, insufficient for Sanchez to overcome the deficit. Election authorities have announced that a winner will not be declared until mid-July. Fujimori’s potential win would signify another shift towards the right in Latin America.

Elsewhere, populist Abelardo de la Espriella achieved a narrow victory in Colombia’s presidential runoff on Sunday, highlighting a regional trend towards candidates with hardline stances, particularly regarding crime.

Sanchez has stated he will not accept a government led by Fujimori, citing severe irregularities during the election process. He accuses the electoral body of mishandling approximately 300,000 overseas votes, which predominantly supported Fujimori, especially from voters in the United States and Japan.

Fujimori’s party has announced it will refrain from declaring victory until all votes are counted. The winner is expected to assume office on July 28, serving a term of five years.

The June 7 runoff featured Fujimori, daughter of the late former President Alberto Fujimori, against Sanchez, the successor of former President Pedro Castillo. Many citizens hoped this election would end years of political instability marked by the imprisonment, deposition, and impeachment of multiple presidents. However, the close result underscores the profound division within the country, contrasting the population-heavy coastal regions with the rural, Indigenous areas in the south.
