New York’s primary day offers insight into the Democratic Party’s evolving directions as Democratic Socialists like Zohran Mamdani campaign fervently for progressive contenders. Candidates such as Claire Valdez, Darieliza Avila Chevalier, and Brad Lander support initiatives like Medicare for All and the dissolution of ICE.
Controversy also surrounds Congressman Dan Goldman, who faced a ban from a Brooklyn coffee shop due to his pro-Israel stance, prompting a civil rights inquiry.
Spotlight on Claire Valdez
State Assemblywoman Claire Valdez, nominated for New York’s 7th Congressional District, encountered pushback online after a podcast clip from May re-emerged post her primary win. In this clip, she advocated for abolishing TSA PreCheck and nationalizing the airline industry.
Valdez commented during a May 1 appearance on “Candidate Corner,” a segment of the “The Bitchuation Room” podcast. She stated, “My hot take is we need to abolish PreCheck. I’ve got, like, a million beefs with the airline industry and the process of having to fly. We need to, like, nationalize the airline industry, but let’s start by abolishing PreCheck.” This clip spread after she triumphed over competitors, including Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso.
Backlash from Various Quarters
Former Rep. Marc Molinaro criticized Valdez, suggesting her policies could complicate air travel, saying, “We’ve reached the point where NY socialist Democrats think making airport security worse & lines longer somehow makes America better.” Tré Easton, previously with Sen. John Fetterman, also ridiculed Valdez’s idea of removing the expedited airport screening.
David J. Bier from the Cato Institute argued that Valdez’s idea might subject the industry to whichever administration is in power, citing potential political misuse. Travel writer Gary Leff defended PreCheck, underscoring its role in targeting actual threats with scarce resources.
Valdez’s Perspective on the Airline Industry
Valdez describes her proposals as countermeasures against airline profitability and insufficient consumer protections. She highlights the inconvenience of current travel practices and the lack of a national rail system as significant issues.
The TSA claims PreCheck enhances security by conducting risk assessments before passengers reach the airport. Since the Airline Deregulation Act of 1978, the U.S. airline industry has largely operated without federal control over fares and routes.
Valdez’s transportation platform involves redirecting federal funds from road infrastructure to public transit, biking, and walking. Neither the abolishment of PreCheck nor nationalizing airlines were highlighted during her campaign.
Fox News Digital has reached out to Claire Valdez and U.S. Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy for comments but has not received responses.
