Virginia State University Shooting Prompts Lockdown

A shooting at Virginia State University involved multiple suspects and left five people injured, resulting in a campus lockdown early Saturday. The incident occurred near the university’s Quad Annexes. Both campus police and the Chesterfield County police are conducting an investigation.
Upon arrival, county police officers found five individuals with gunshot wounds outside campus dormitories. These victims were taken to hospitals. One victim, initially reported with life-threatening injuries, is now in critical condition. Other victims sustained injuries that are not life-threatening.
The university released a statement confirming the involvement of multiple suspects. It advised everyone to avoid the area. According to the statement, “VSU Police and the Chesterfield County Police Department are actively investigating. The campus community should continue to avoid the area and follow all law enforcement instructions.”
A significant law enforcement presence was noted on Saturday morning. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office are assisting the county police. Virginia State Police have referred inquiries to local authorities, who are leading the investigation. More details are expected to be released later today.
Virginia State University is a historically Black university located in Ettrick, Virginia, roughly 24 miles south of Richmond. This public university enrolls approximately 5,700 students and holds the distinction of being the first fully state-supported four-year college designated for Black Americans. Most attendees are undergraduates. The shooting occurred shortly before the academic year commenced, following the opening of residence halls a week ago. The “New Trojans Experience” for incoming students concluded recently, with classes scheduled to begin on Monday.
