In Caracas, volunteers from a middle-class neighborhood came together to search for survivors after devastating earthquakes. Equipped with basic tools like drills, picks, and hammers, they worked tirelessly to break through concrete debris.
Fabiola Ferrero and Julie Turkewitz reported from the San Bernardino neighborhood, where rescue efforts were in full swing. The scene highlighted the dire lack of heavy machinery crucial for rescue operations. Despite this, the community mobilized significantly to bridge the gap.
The focal point was the Residencia Rita, an apartment building that collapsed during the quakes. Finding any survivors amid the rubble three days post-quake was considered nearly impossible. Yet, hundreds gathered on Saturday to aid the search.
A human chain formed, where volunteers passed along buckets of debris in a bid to clear paths. ‘We will always have hope,’ stated María Alejandra Navarro, a journalist with rescue training. She arrived with a team of 14 volunteers, ready to assist in the efforts.
As neighbors watched, rescue teams continued their painstaking work. The scene demonstrated both the severity of the situation and the community’s resilience and hope.
