Pakistani security forces conducted an operation on Sunday along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. This operation included ground action followed by targeted airstrikes on militant hideouts, resulting in the deaths of 29 fighters, as reported by officials.
Information Minister Attaullah Tarar stated in a post on X that the operation was a response to recent militant attacks across Pakistan. Afghanistan has not issued an immediate response to this development.
There has been an increase in militant attacks in Pakistan, primarily targeting police and security forces. The government blames groups such as the Pakistani Taliban, known as Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), and affiliated militants for much of the violence.
On Saturday night, the Regional Headquarters of the paramilitary Rangers in Karachi came under attack by militants armed with guns and explosives, resulting in the death of three soldiers. Security forces responded by killing three of the attackers and captured another, an Afghan national, in a wounded state. Jamaat-ul-Ahrar, a faction that split from the Pakistani Taliban, claimed responsibility for this attack in a statement made on Saturday night.
According to Tarar, the operation at the Afghan border targeted the TTP’s hideouts and safe havens. The Pakistani Taliban and the Afghan Taliban are distinct organizations, though they maintain alliances. The Afghan Taliban returned to power in Afghanistan after events in 2021.
The current actions may worsen the already tense relations between Islamabad and Kabul.
Escalating Cross-Border Tensions
The recent operations come a little over two weeks after airstrikes conducted by Pakistan on similar targets in Afghanistan. These actions halted a month of relative calm, despite ongoing international attempts to establish peace.
Retaliation has been frequent. This year, there has been significant cross-border conflict. Since February, substantial deaths have occurred on both sides due to military actions. This escalation began when Afghanistan launched retaliatory strikes after Pakistan conducted airstrikes inside Afghan territory.
Efforts for peace have seen little success, with multiple rounds of internationally mediated talks failing to secure a ceasefire. In April, China facilitated discussions between the two countries, which resulted in a temporary agreement to seek peaceful resolutions.
Pakistan continues its operations against TTP and other militant hideouts within Afghanistan. The Pakistani government accuses Afghanistan’s Taliban-led government of sheltering terrorists who commit attacks in Pakistan, especially targeting TTP components. Kabul denies these accusations.
