Chicago Cubs manager Craig Counsell faced more bad news with additional injuries to Matt Shaw and Ethan Roberts before the team’s 3-2 victory over the San Diego Padres. This adds to a growing list of injured players in what has been an eventful 2026 season. The season began with high hopes but has encountered numerous challenges.
The Cubs, dealing with intense heat and winds, need to find the right pitching combinations. Struggling veterans like Alex Bregman are hoped to benefit offensively from the summer conditions. Although the team holds a 46-38 record as they near the All-Star break, the challenges have raised doubts about their ability to compete strongly in the postseason.
Despite setbacks, Counsell remains focused on navigating through the injuries. He noted that every season presents its own challenges, and the current high number of pitching injuries is just part of the game.
Earlier in the season, optimism was high with a strong start of 27-12. However, subsequent injuries and offensive struggles by key players like Bregman led to a downturn. Pete Crow-Armstrong faced his own challenges but has become one of the team’s top hitters since mid-May. He expressed confidence in his abilities, stating support from his teammates is all he needs.
Bregman’s performance has disappointed, with a .163 batting average in key situations. He remains focused on improving consistency and hitting. Counsell acknowledged Bregman’s challenges and highlighted the ongoing efforts to improve his performance.
On Sunday, Bregman drew criticism for not running full speed on a critical play. He explained past injuries influence his cautious approach. Nonetheless, he aims to enhance his performance to contribute to the team’s success.
The Cubs require Bregman’s resurgence for a competitive edge, while Crow-Armstrong’s current performance offers hope. Counsell’s remarks suggested that immediate trades are unlikely, emphasizing the need to solve pitching challenges internally.
Counsell, known for problem-solving, was hired for such situations. If he guides the Cubs into the postseason despite the obstacles, his leadership will prove invaluable.
