Morocco emerged victorious over the Netherlands in a dramatic penalty shootout, marking the Dutch team’s earliest World Cup exit to date. The match unfolded in Guadalupe, Mexico, where Ismael Saibari scored the decisive goal in the shootout, leading Morocco to clinch a 3-2 victory after the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
The shootout was intense, tied at 2-all after four rounds. Morocco’s goalkeeper, Yassine Bounou, made a crucial save against Crysencio Summerville’s shot, deflecting it with his left hand. Saibari then secured the win by sending the ball into the low left corner, tricking Dutch goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen. The decisive goal led to a jubilant celebration, with Saibari and his teammates celebrating on the field.
We know when we do everything on the pitch, it’s God that gives something back to us as well.
Morocco’s head coach Mohamed Ouahbi expressed faith and gratitude for the team’s performance. He highlighted Soufiane Rahimi’s crucial goal during the shootout, where Verbruggen appeared to have stopped the ball but ended up deflecting it into the net.
The Netherlands had consistently reached the Round of 16 or beyond in 11 previous World Cups. Their longest run included a quarterfinal appearance four years ago in Qatar. Meanwhile, Morocco had made history as the first African team to reach the semifinals during that tournament. The current World Cup, featuring an expanded format, allowed 32 teams to enter the knockout stage for the first time.
The victory set Morocco up to face co-host Canada in the Round of 16, scheduled for Saturday in Houston. Morocco had defeated Canada 2-1 during the group stage of the 2022 World Cup. During the match against the Netherlands, Morocco displayed an aggressive strategy, while the Dutch relied on counterattacking.
I think Morocco has gained everybody’s respect now.
Ouahbi noted that the Netherlands’ counterattacking strategy signaled respect for Morocco’s capabilities. Cody Gakpo had put the Netherlands ahead with a goal in the 72nd minute. The goal was assisted by Summerville, leading to emotional scenes as Gakpo was embraced by the Dutch bench. Gakpo, dealing with personal loss, broke down in tears.
Morocco’s Issa Diop equalized in the 91st minute. Chemsdine Talbi delivered a looping cross from about 28 yards on the left side, connecting with Diop who headed the ball firmly past Verbruggen.
During extra time, neither team managed strong scoring opportunities at Estadio BBVA. In the second half of extra time, Dutch head coach Ronald Koeman brought on Justin Kluivert, known for his penalty skills, but Kluivert was among three Dutch players who missed their shootout attempts. Koeman acknowledged the disappointment of Kluivert’s miss.
This defeat marked the third consecutive World Cup elimination for the Netherlands via penalty shootout. Earlier the same day, Paraguay eliminated Germany in another shootout, despite both teams entering with high global rankings. Morocco was ranked sixth while the Netherlands was seventh.
We need to be telling ourselves that no one can stop us.
Head coach Ouahbi instilled confidence in his team, reminding them that no opponent is unbeatable. He maintained focus and determination as Morocco advanced in the tournament.
