California Couple Claims Moving Company Holds Belongings Hostage over Disputed Fees

A couple moving from California to North Carolina faced an unexpected challenge when their moving company reportedly held their belongings hostage. The couple had agreed to a $16,000 fee for the move, paying a $7,000 deposit upfront. However, on moving day, the company allegedly increased the cost to $32,000, citing more belongings than estimated, according to CBS 8.

The situation escalated when the company attempted an early delivery. The couple claimed the company tried to charge even more fees, including a redelivery fee. The moving truck reportedly arrived one week earlier than the couple was prepared to receive their items. This added another layer of complexity and cost to their already strained situation.

John Nelson, one of the affected parties, expressed his frustration, stating, “They’ve got $30,000 and they’ve got our stuff… and they’re basically holding it for ransom.” He further alleged that the earlier delivery attempt might have been a tactic to extract more money, suggesting that the truck used was not the same as the one that loaded their belongings.

“When you move, it’s an important thing… you never expect someone to take your stuff and not deliver it,” Nelson emphasized. As far as I’m concerned, they’ve got stolen property that’s crossed state lines.”

In response to these events, the couple filed police reports in both Oceanside and their new location in North Carolina. They also lodged complaints with the Better Business Bureau (BBB). Reports indicate that the broker in question has had 280 complaints over the past three years. While the broker disputed the couple’s claims, they stated an effort is underway to resolve the issue.
