A significant portion of Americans believe President Donald Trump is not addressing the key issues important to them, according to a recent poll by The Economist/YouGov. Released on Tuesday, the poll indicates that 60 percent of respondents feel Trump “hasn’t paid attention to the most important problems” facing the country.
This sentiment underscores ongoing concerns about the president’s priorities, even as his administration advances several initiatives, including foreign policy decisions amidst tensions with Iran. The poll emerges as Trump faces criticism for dismissing a housing bill meant to address rising housing costs. On Monday, Trump described the legislation as “a big yawn” while speaking to reporters.
Texas Democratic Congresswoman Julie Johnson criticized the president’s focus, commenting on social media, “While Trump obsesses over clinging to power, I’m focused on addressing the housing crisis and lowering your costs.” Trump later expressed uncertainty about whether he would sign the housing bill, stating, “I don’t know. I think it’s so unimportant compared to the SAVE America Act.” This statement occurs while home prices continue to be a major concern for many Americans, pressuring families financially nationwide.
White House spokesperson Taylor Rogers defended the president, stating, “President Trump remains laser-focused on lowering costs for working families, keeping the American people safe, and making this country greater than ever before.” He emphasized Trump’s commitment to making homeownership affordable through executive actions, such as preventing Wall Street firms from acquiring single-family homes and reducing regulatory burdens.
What The Poll Shows
The poll reveals that 60 percent of Americans believe the president has not focused on the country’s most pressing concerns, compared to 29 percent who think he has prioritized the right issues. Eleven percent remain unsure.
When asked about the most critical issue, 30 percent cited inflation/prices, 15 percent pointed to jobs and the economy, and 9 percent mentioned health care. Other choices received single-digit responses. A previous poll highlighted similar top issues.
The recent survey, conducted from June 26 to June 29, 2026, included 1,606 U.S. adults and features a margin of error of 3.2 percent. It shows 28 percent of participants believe the country is moving in the right direction, while 61 percent think it is on the wrong track, with 11 percent unsure. These numbers reflect a slight decrease from the prior week.
The poll results and Trump’s recent statements may fuel critiques suggesting he is not focused on everyday voter concerns. With six out of ten Americans stating the president has ignored critical issues, questions about his priorities could become a political liability, despite the White House’s emphasis on its broader economic agenda.
Focus on Iran and Security
Trump recently faced criticism for his comments dismissing Americans’ personal financial situations while negotiating with Iran. “Not even a little bit,” Trump stated, emphasizing his sole focus on preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons.
Democratic critics argue this shows Trump is disconnected from the financial challenges faced by working families with basic household costs, such as housing, groceries, and gas. In response, White House Communications Director Steven Cheung emphasized the president’s responsibility for American safety and security, noting the threat posed by a nuclear-armed Iran.
Beautification Projects in Washington
President Trump has also devoted attention to reshaping Washington, D.C., focusing on beautification projects around the nation’s capital. These initiatives have included changes near the White House and the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. However, they have drawn legal challenges and criticism for prioritizing symbolic projects over economic concerns affecting families nationwide.
Amid scrutiny over maintenance issues like algae blooms in the Reflecting Pool, Trump claimed it now looks “beautiful” in a post on Truth Social. He also warned vandals of potential jail time for monument attacks. Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal has pressed the administration and involved contractors for details on ongoing issues and contract qualifications.
