The absence of Representative Tom Kean Jr., a congressman from New Jersey, has turned into a mystifying case that draws attention. For nearly three months, Kean hasn’t been seen in public. This situation started quietly with a political website reporting in March that the congressman missed a week’s worth of votes in Washington. He cast his last vote in Congress on March 5.
Initially, missing a few votes wasn’t alarming. However, after the Easter recess, it became unusual when two Republican colleagues from New Jersey reported they knew nothing about Kean’s whereabouts. Republican leaders expressed frustration as their messages to Kean went unanswered. The story gained more attention when Dan Scharfenberger, Kean’s chief of staff, told The New York Times in May, “There’s no cameras where Tom is.”
As the congressional primary approached, with Kean facing no Republican opposition, he participated in minimal campaign activities. His involvement was mainly through phone calls to a New Jersey political journalist and Republican leaders in his district. Joe LaBarbera, chairman of the Republican Party in Sussex County, recounted how Kean asked for prayers when inquired if he needed anything.
Kean’s aides have mentioned his absence is due to a “personal medical issue.” They have not provided further details but reassured the public since April of his expected full recovery and return to work soon.
As voters head to the polls for the congressional primary, the mystery surrounding the missing legislator remains puzzling and unresolved despite persistent efforts to uncover answers.
