Restrictions Lifted on Anthropic’s AI Models

The Commerce Department removed restrictions on Anthropic’s AI models on Tuesday. This decision allows the company to reactivate its powerful AI technologies. This development marks a decrease in tensions with the Trump administration.

The announcement came through a letter from Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick to Anthropic, obtained by The New York Times. Lutnick stated that Anthropic no longer needs a license for exports or in-country transfers of its Claude Mythos and Claude Fable models, reversing a previous order from June 12.

“Anthropic has taken steps in close coordination with the U.S. government to address the risks associated with Claude Mythos 5 and Claude Fable 5,” Lutnick wrote in the letter.

This move signals a potential resolution to Anthropic’s challenging relationship with the federal government. Initially, the Commerce Department required Anthropic to halt access to its AI models for all foreign nationals due to national security concerns.

These controls had prompted questions about the administration’s approach to the rapidly growing AI sector. They also threatened to hinder technology advancements at Anthropic, a leading AI company alongside OpenAI. The Claude models are notable for their superiority in identifying software security flaws.

This is the second occurrence where the Trump administration targeted Anthropic. In March, discussions over the potential military use of Anthropic’s AI led the Pentagon to label the company as a supply chain risk. The designation posed challenges for its use by federal agencies, prompting Anthropic to sue the government.
