Melat Kiros, a 29-year-old democratic socialist, has made a significant impact by defeating Representative Diana DeGette in the Denver area Democratic primary. Her victory highlights the growing strength of the progressive wing of the Democratic Party.
Kiros’ win unseats DeGette, a 15-term incumbent, and adds momentum to a series of recent victories by insurgent candidates in various congressional races, including several in New York.
As an immigrant and a first-time candidate, Kiros’ background is unique. She was born a year after DeGette first took office. Her triumph in this predominantly Democratic district puts her in a strong position for the November election.
Kiros is a lawyer and is pursuing a doctoral degree in public affairs. She portrayed herself as an outsider in politics, focusing on the affordability crisis she claims the current Democratic leadership has failed to address. Her stance against U.S. support for Israel was a key component of her campaign strategy and political stance.
Despite DeGette’s fundraising edge, supported by last-minute spending from external groups, Kiros’ grassroots campaign made significant headway. With nearly 80 percent of votes counted early Wednesday, Kiros led by over five percentage points.
In her campaign biography, Kiros mentions her 2023 dismissal from a Manhattan law firm. This occurred after she refused to retract a letter questioning Israel’s historical legitimacy and defending pro-Palestinian activities on campuses. This part of her history was a notable aspect of her political platform.
