The Indiana Pacers faced the unique challenge of having just one pick in this year’s NBA draft. With their lone choice at No. 28, their selection remained uncertain until the announcement.
Ultimately, the Pacers chose Braden Smith, a point guard from Purdue, demonstrating strategic thinking in their draft decision. CBS Sports’ Cameron Salerno awarded a B grade for this pick. However, there is a perspective that suggests the grade could be elevated.
“Indiana has a history of successfully developing point guards,” Salerno noted. “Smith, known for his excellent playmaking skills during his time at Purdue, is expected to quickly find a role within the rotation. He provides essential depth following Tyrese Haliburton’s season-long absence due to a torn Achilles.”
Opinion: Braden Smith from Purdue is Underestimated
Smith stands out as an exceptional player. His talent should have seen him drafted earlier, yet he was somewhat overlooked. Despite leading the NCAA in assists at Purdue, scouts focused on his physical stature, under six feet, affecting his draft position.
This mirrors the case of Jalen Brunson, proving that size isn’t everything in the NBA. Smith’s return to his home state positions him perfectly to make an impact with the Pacers.
