At a recent hearing on Capitol Hill, Jessica Gorman, the mother of a Loyola University Chicago student, passionately criticized Democrat sanctuary city policies. Her plea came after the tragic death of her 18-year-old daughter, Sheridan Gorman, who was killed in March. The hearing was convened by a House Judiciary subcommittee to assess the effects of sanctuary policies.
Details of Sheridan Gorman’s Tragic Death
Sheridan Gorman, a freshman at Loyola University Chicago, lost her life on March 19. While walking with friends near Tobey Prinz Beach in the Rogers Park neighborhood, a man approached the group. Authorities identified the man as Jose Medina-Medina, who wore dark clothing and a mask. As the group attempted to flee, Medina-Medina opened fire, resulting in Sheridan’s death.
Medina-Medina was taken into custody days afterward. He has entered a plea of not guilty on charges including first-degree murder, attempted murder, and weapons offenses.
An Emotional Testimony at the Hearing
During the hearing, Jessica Gorman implored lawmakers to reassess their priorities, questioning why undocumented individuals seem valued over U.S. citizens. She emphasized her daughter’s life, stressing that “sanctuary policies matter more than my Sheridan’s life.” Gorman criticized the lack of cooperation with immigration authorities, stating that while parents are bearing the pain of burying their children, collaboration on immigration issues seems unattainable.
Jessica Gorman also confronted lawmakers’ expressions of sympathy, demanding explanations for the policies she believes led to her daughter’s death. She adamantly declared that there is “no ‘but’” when a family loses a child and urged members of Congress to take responsibility for their decisions.
Rep. Pramila Jayapal, serving as the Democratic ranking member, noted this was the fourth hearing of its kind by the committee. She suggested alternative priorities, such as scrutinizing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) actions. Gorman criticized Democratic lawmakers, claiming indifference due to the repeated occurrence of similar family testimonies, sarcastically stating, “Thanks for telling me you don’t care.”
The Department of Homeland Security noted that Medina-Medina was initially arrested by U.S. Border Patrol on May 9, 2023, and subsequently released under the Biden administration. Following another arrest in Chicago for shoplifting on June 19, 2023, he was released once more.
