Victor Willis, known as the lead singer of the Village People, has died at the age of 74. His passing was confirmed by his wife and the band in social media posts made on Wednesday. Willis’s wife, Karen-Huff Willis, shared that her husband succumbed to a brief, intense illness on June 30, 2026.
The Texas-born musician co-founded the Village People and co-wrote iconic hits such as “Y.M.C.A,” “In the Navy,” and “Macho Man.” These songs dominated dancefloors worldwide in the late 1970s. The group’s extravagant costumes and choreography contributed to their status as a pop culture sensation, appealing to a vast disco audience. The band’s characters, including builders, bikers, cowboys, and soldiers, embraced camp fantasy.
Willis initially left the group in 1980 but rejoined in 2017. During his time away, he struggled with drug addiction, which led to a plea deal for cocaine possession in 2006. He later shared with the San Diego Union Tribune that he dealt with profound depression over the years and turned to drugs as a result.
“I got very depressed over the years and decided to just drop off the map. So I got into drugs,” he said in 2015.
The song “Y.M.C.A.,” often considered an anthem for the LGBTQ community, was sometimes associated with right-wing movements, partly due to its use at Trump rallies. In a 2020 interview with the BBC, Willis clarified that neither he nor the Village People endorsed Donald Trump. However, due to U.S. copyright laws, the former president was able to play their music at his events.
The band performed “Y.M.C.A.” at a Trump rally in January 2025. During the event, Willis urged people to give Trump a chance, promising that the Village People would oppose any efforts restricting LGBTQ rights.
In 2012, Willis obtained partial ownership of the copyrights to numerous Village People songs, a decision that facilitated his return to the band in 2017, according to BBC News.
