Michael Weatherly is set to return to ‘NCIS’ as Tony DiNozzo, a decade after leaving the show. CBS announced on July 1 that the 57-year-old actor will play his popular character in season 24.
Weatherly was a main cast member for 13 seasons before his departure in 2016. He will have a season-long arc, reuniting with the ‘NCIS’ team. The network confirmed this in a press release.
On the show’s Instagram account, Weatherly shared the news, stating, “I’ll see you in the fall,” accompanied by the caption, “We’ve missed this one… welcome back, old friend!”
Weatherly previously appeared in a season 21 episode titled “The Stories We Leave Behind,” which honored David McCallum and his character, Dr. Donald “Ducky” Mallard, after McCallum’s death in September 2023. He also reprised the role in the Paramount+ spinoff, “NCIS: Tony & Ziva,” with co-star Cote de Pablo.
The spinoff series was canceled in December after one season, leading fans to express their desire for a reunion of Tony and Ziva on ‘NCIS.’ In social media comments, fans expressed excitement about Weatherly’s return and hoped for de Pablo’s involvement as well.
When the news of the spinoff’s cancellation emerged, Weatherly and de Pablo issued a joint statement, thanking the cast, crew, and fans. They expressed gratitude for the opportunity to bring back Tony and Ziva and for the fan support during their journey.
In addition to Weatherly, the returning cast for season 24 includes Sean Murray, Wilmer Valderrama, Brian Dietzen, Diona Reasonover, Katrina Law, and Gary Cole. ‘NCIS’ will air Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET this fall on CBS and will also be available on Paramount+.
