Understanding Postpartum Pet Aversion: A Common Experience for New Parents
After becoming a new mother, Elen encountered an unexpected change in her feelings towards her dog. This phenomenon is known as postpartum pet aversion. Once shared walks and bonding moments were now replaced with irritation, leading Elen to feel bewildered and guilty. Her story highlights a situation many new parents face.
Marilyn Cross Coleman, a licensed clinical social worker and perinatal mental health specialist in California, noted that while postpartum pet aversion is not a recognized medical diagnosis, it is something she frequently observes in her practice. “The once-cherished pet can quickly become a source of irritation when a baby arrives,” Cross Coleman explained. She emphasized this is a common response resulting from profound emotional and neurological changes following childbirth.
Recognizing Postpartum Pet Aversion
Postpartum pet aversion typically starts with a parent’s unexpected change in feelings towards their pet once the baby comes home. Elen, for example, found that quiet evening cuddles with her dog, previously a comforting ritual, suddenly felt overwhelming.
“Interacting with the pet can feel overstimulating or like it’s just another chore,” Elen said.
Parents may also become anxious about their pet interacting with the baby or develop resentment towards their pet, leading to feelings of guilt. Cross Coleman identified these reactions, especially when combined with exhaustion and stress, as indicators of postpartum pet aversion.
Understanding Why It Happens
Cross Coleman explained the change is less about the pet and more about the shifts occurring in a new parent’s brain and nervous system. “Neurological changes after giving birth prioritize keeping the infant alive,” she noted.
Hormonal changes, sleep deprivation, and the demands of caring for a newborn can exhaust parents, making previously enjoyable activities feel burdensome. Elen felt “depleted” by the end of each day, and had little energy left for her dog.
Parents may also worry about their pet’s behavior around the baby, such as barking, germs, or accidental scratches as their protective instincts increase.
Adjustments for Pets
While parents adapt to these changes, pets also face adjustments. Mel Ritterman, a dog behavior specialist with Cooper and Kids, explained that dogs sense changes in their environment.
“Their home suddenly smells, sounds, and feels different,” Ritterman stated. “Newborns introduce unfamiliar sounds, visitors, and a new routine, affecting a dog’s stability.”
Some dogs adapt well, while others may seek more attention, become withdrawn, or show signs of stress. Ritterman stressed these behaviors often stem from stress or unmet needs.
When the Situation May Require More Attention
Postpartum pet aversion is usually temporary and specific to the early postpartum period. However, if feelings of irritability extend beyond pet interactions or include severe anxiety, sadness, or functional difficulties, it might signal a broader postpartum mental health issue.
Steps to Take
Cross Coleman advised removing shame from experiencing these feelings. “There is no need for guilt,” she said. “Consider what your nervous system communicates. Often, the answer is exhaustion and overwhelm.”
She recommends seeking help from friends or family for pet care and advises against permanent decisions like rehoming a pet unless safety is a concern. Ritterman suggested maintaining familiar routines and incorporating enrichment activities for pets during the transition period.
Both experts emphasized that postpartum pet aversion doesn’t mean a lack of love for the pet. Reassurance that these feelings are temporary can replace guilt with understanding.
For parents like Elen, realizing that these feelings may not be permanent helps maintain the bond with their beloved pet.
