The U.S. men’s national soccer team achieved a landmark win in their 2-0 World Cup match against Bosnia and Herzegovina. This game became the most-watched English-language soccer broadcast in U.S. television history. Fox Sports reported a peak audience of about 31.8 million viewers, with an average viewership of 24.4 million. Additionally, the Spanish-language broadcast on Telemundo attracted 9.1 million viewers.
World Cup Viewership Competing With Other Major Sporting Events
This historic match surpassed the previous record held by the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup final, where 22.3 million viewers watched the U.S. face Japan. In the group-stage matches, the average viewership for the games against Paraguay, Turkey, and Australia was around 18 million, 17 million, and 16 million respectively, according to Nielsen.
Comparing with other major sport events in the U.S., the NBA Finals saw the New York Knicks triumph over the San Antonio Spurs, attracting 24.5 million viewers, the highest since 1998. The final game of the 2025 Major League Baseball World Series had an average viewership of 27.3 million. NFL’s Sunday Night Football averaged 23.5 million viewers in its last season. Despite these impressive figures, the Super Bowl remains unmatched, with the recent game drawing an average of 125.6 million viewers across various platforms.
World Cup Attracting a Growing US Audience
The upcoming 2026 World Cup provides new opportunities as it will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. This arrangement offers American fans unique access through local venues, convenient kick-off times, and extensive domestic coverage. This event seems to be attracting more casual U.S. viewers, extending beyond traditional soccer fan bases and capturing broader television audiences.
For comparison, the 2022 World Cup final, featuring Argentina and France, attracted 25.8 million viewers across Fox and Telemundo. The most-watched game of the U.S. were group-stage matches, with the game against England drawing 19.9 million viewers. Their last-16 match against the Netherlands garnered 16.5 million viewers.
With the U.S. advancing to the last 16 in the World Cup, they are set to play Belgium on Monday, a match that is expected to draw a substantial audience as well.
