Chad Pergram reports from Capitol Hill on the increasing influence of democratic socialists within the Democratic Party. A notable figure in this movement is Melat Kiros, a 29-year-old who defeated a long-serving incumbent in the Colorado primary. Her platform includes policies like abolishing ICE, Medicare for all, and addressing human rights issues in Palestine.
Kiros has been vocal about her stance on Middle Eastern politics, attributing violence against Jewish communities abroad to Israel’s actions. This perspective aligns her with a growing group of anti-Israel, far-left candidates within the party. Kiros recently won in her Denver-area district, unseating long-time incumbent Diana DeGette. This victory follows similar wins by far-left candidates in New York’s primaries.
Recently, Colorado Attorney General and Democratic gubernatorial candidate Phil Weiser expressed concerns about Kiros’s approach to a tragic event in Boulder where a pro-Israel rally was attacked. In a discussion earlier in the week, Kiros was questioned about labeling the event as antisemitic. Weiser has called for a meeting with Kiros to discuss these issues.
At the end of the day, what happened in Boulder was a horrific attack on a group of Jewish people that were peacefully protesting,Kiros said, expressing her openness to work with Weiser. We are seeing that the actions of Israel are putting Jewish people in great danger. The hate and antisemitism that’s rising as a result is one that I have every intention of prioritizing and combating. The attack referenced involved Mohamed Soliman, who was convicted of the incident in Boulder on June 1, 2025, where a pro-Israel demonstration was targeted. The attack resulted in the death of 82-year-old Karen Diamond and injuries to a dozen others. Soliman disguised himself before launching incendiary devices at the demonstrators. He was later sentenced to life in prison without parole after pleading guilty to state charges, including murder.
Soliman stated he did not act out of hatred for Jews but described his actions as opposition to Zionism—a complex contention that still subjects him to federal hate crime charges.
Kiros used her primary campaign to highlight her opposition to Israeli policy, making a passionate case for what she described as ending the ‘genocide in Palestine.’ Her stance was a significant part of her platform, contributing to her electoral success.
