Stranded Humpback Whale Inspires and Divides in Germany

In mid-April, near Germany’s northeast coast, Sergio Bambarén, a Peruvian spiritual author and motivational speaker, entered the Baltic Sea. He submerged his head into the cold waters, singing to a stranded humpback whale.

Bambarén is not a marine biologist. He was invited by a millionaire funding a private rescue mission for the whale, nicknamed “Timmy” by the media. Timmy had been stranded since March. Despite several attempts by public officials, freeing Timmy proved unsuccessful.

Bambarén, claiming experience from five other whale rescues, interacted with Timmy through underwater song. “He immediately felt we were trying to help him,” Bambarén said about Timmy’s response.

The situation seemed to unite Germany. Crowds gathered daily on Poel Island, watching Timmy in the water. Thousands more followed the developments online, urging efforts to rescue the whale.

Initially, Timmy brought out the compassion and solidarity of the German people. However, the situation took a turn later, revealing deeper divisions.

The rescue effort involved watering Timmy, highlighting the attention and care given. Yet, as events unfolded, blame and frustration surfaced among those involved.
