Iran has commenced public mourning ceremonies for Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, initiating a weeklong tribute deeply rooted in Shiite Islamic customs. The ceremonies are expected to draw millions as they journey across Iran and extend into neighboring Iraq.
According to state media, the procession will transport Khamenei’s body through at least five cities, including Tehran, the capital, starting over the weekend. The journey will conclude in Mashhad, Iran’s holiest city and Khamenei’s birthplace, on Thursday. Along the route, the procession will visit several of Shiite Islam’s most revered shrines.
The events initiated on Friday at the Grand Mosalla in Tehran. This large prayer complex has been a significant site where Khamenei delivered important speeches during his three-decade tenure as supreme leader. Khamenei’s death occurred on February 28 during the U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran, delaying his funeral for several months.
Under Iran’s theocratic rule, Khamenei held top positions across all government branches and was the nation’s highest-ranking cleric. For many Shiite followers in Iran and the broader region, his death is of spiritual importance beyond just political implications.
This week of mourning presents substantial logistical challenges for Iran’s government, as it unfolds amid the unresolved conflict with the United States and extreme summer heat.
The attendance of Khamenei’s son and successor, Mojtaba Khamenei, remains uncertain. Mojtaba was injured in an airstrike around the time of his father’s death and has not appeared publicly since the incident.
