In MIAMI GARDENS, Fla., Vozinha aimed for his mother to witness him play in the World Cup. He achieved much more than that. Despite Cape Verde not winning any matches, the team’s first appearance in the tournament remained memorable. The 40-year-old goalkeeper almost orchestrated one of the biggest surprises in sports history.
Cape Verde’s adventure concluded in the Round of 32 with a narrow loss to Argentina, the reigning World Cup champions. The final score was 3-2 in extra time, a closer match than anticipated.
We have dignified Cape Verde as a national team in most parts of the world,
Vozinha expressed in Portuguese after the intense game. Cape Verde’s efforts paid off with a scoreless draw against Spain to start the tournament. Vozinha’s leadership was crucial in this achievement, along with the global effort to bring his mother to the U.S. to watch the group stage games.
Cape Verde secured their spot in the knockout phase with two more dramatic draws. Although Messi’s goal and a decisive corner kick during extra time helped Argentina win, Cape Verde pushed the top-ranked team to their limits. Vozinha repeatedly thwarted attempts by Lionel Messi, recognized as one of the world’s best players.
Cape Verde defender Pico Lopes, recruited to the team via LinkedIn, highlighted Vozinha’s exceptional skills:He’s a quality, quality goalkeeper. Probably hasn’t gotten the recognition he deserves before this. … He’s a legend in Cape Verdean football.
Vozinha made at least four critical saves against Messi in the last hour:
- At the 63rd minute, a point-blank save blocking a powerful shot from Messi.
- In the 73rd minute, deflecting a free kick destined for the goal’s right side.
- Stopping a low free kick during stoppage time.
- Diving left to block a shot from Messi in extra time.
Cape Verde’s coach Bubista praised the team’s performance, acknowledging the formidable challenge posed by Argentina and Messi:
Argentina is a world champion and they have one of the best players in the world, so that in itself speaks of the challenge it was for our team to overcome them.
Cape Verde, the smallest country by land area to reach the World Cup, receives $11 million from FIFA for advancing to this stage. More significantly, the Blue Sharks gained international recognition and support throughout their exceptional World Cup journey.
Lopes reflected on their newfound visibility:Nobody has to ask where Cape Verde is now. They know where we are.
