Primm, Nevada once stood as a vibrant stopover for travelers on Interstate 15, offering a family-friendly gambling destination just past the Nevada border. Yet, with the increase of casinos across the U.S., this small town has faced a prolonged downturn. Nowadays, Primm is nearly a ghost town, marked by the sounds of crows and passing trucks.
The Prizm Outlets, previously known as the Fashion Outlets of Las Vegas, are nearly empty. Once bustling with shops like Coach and Michael Kors, this location now serves as a canvas for artists’ murals. Today, only one store, Sanithrift, remains open here.
Impact of Tribal Casinos
According to David Schwartz, a gaming historian from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, tribal casinos in Southern California have offered a convenient alternative to traveling to Primm. In its prime during the 1990s and early 2000s, Primm attracted visitors with affordable rooms, gambling, rodeos, boxing matches, and concerts by renowned artists like Aretha Franklin. Family attractions included a roller coaster, monorail, and log flume ride.
Schwartz notes, “That era was filled with ambitious dreams. With Las Vegas expanding rapidly, the prosperity felt as though it would last indefinitely.”
Decline of Primm
Currently, two of Primm’s three hotels, Buffalo Bill’s and Whiskey Pete’s, have closed. The amusement rides are no longer operational. The outlet mall, once one of the nation’s top shopping centers, now houses just one store.
Affinity Interactive, the casino-hotel operator in Primm, recently announced the closure of the last standing hotel, the Primm Valley Resort & Casino, alongside significant staff layoffs. The Primm family, still owning the land, has partnered with Terrible’s, a Nevada-based convenience store chain, to revive the town.
Cory Clemetson, Ernie Primm’s grandson, expressed optimism, stating, “We aim for a great revival in Nevada history. Transforming a ghost town into a thriving community once more is our challenge.”
Inspiration from Las Vegas
Las Vegas provides a blueprint for Primm’s revival. Despite the proliferation of casinos nationwide, Las Vegas has maintained high tourism by continuously reinventing itself. The city attracts visitors with investments in major venues like the Venetian, Mirage, and Sphere, as well as sports arenas like Allegiant Stadium and T-Mobile Arena.
“Las Vegas drew visitors by enhancing its attractions,” Schwartz explains. “These projects give people compelling reasons to visit Las Vegas instead of choosing nearby casinos.”
