The recent celebration of 250 years of American independence in Brussels led to unexpected consequences. Organized at the Cinquantenaire Park, the event featured lobster rolls, country music, and fireworks.
Fireworks caused black marks on a structure within the park, confirmed by U.S. ambassador to Belgium, Bill White. The fireworks company responsible will manage the repairs. White suggested a storm before the event might have removed protective coating from the building.
“There are some black soot marks on the top of the monument where the fireworks went off,” said White. He also confirmed communication with Brussels’ mayor, Philippe Close, regarding the incident. The building is part of the Royal Museums of Art and History.
Earlier reports from Belgian news outlets De Standaard and Het Nieuwsblad highlighted possible damage. In response, White assured on social media that he was in contact with the Belgian company coordinating the event.
The Belgian Buildings Agency, led by Vanessa Matz, stated that they are analyzing the damage to the roofs and cornices. The storm might have also contributed to the issues.
