A Critical Look at America’s 250th Anniversary
The Patrouille de France flyers of the French Air and Space Force trailed colored smoke near the National Mall, commemorating the 250th anniversary of the United States on June 22, 2026, in Washington. Despite this significant milestone, many Americans don’t feel celebratory. Fewer people are proud of their country now than at any point in the last 25 years.
The country’s bureaucracy and legal systems, once reliable, now face criticism. Congress holds an approval rating likened to head lice or used-car salesmen. Instead of creating laws for citizens, legislators pen them for donors. These laws are cloaked in complex language, operating like malicious software designed to mask backdoors and corporate benefits from the public.
Likewise, the Supreme Court’s reputation has suffered. Many see it unfavorably, viewing it as a corporate legal department that reshapes rules for the powerful. As religious institutions decline, social support networks have weakened, leaving Americans with high rent, stagnant wages, and deep loneliness.
Political leadership fails to inspire confidence. President Biden’s term is seen as lackluster, while former President Trump, in his return, treats leadership as a business, leading to military actions that contradicted his promises. This political chaos has eroded trust in democracy.
The tech industry has aggravated the situation. Algorithms thrive on discord, trapping citizens in echo chambers that reinforce negative stereotypes across the political spectrum. Soon, artificial intelligence will intensify this divisive media landscape.
Despite these issues, most Americans remain decent individuals who seek simple, peaceful lives. Yet, they are caught in a flawed system that amplifies negative impulses. The reluctance to celebrate the bicentennial is less about a lack of patriotism and more a symptom of deep societal fatigue.
