On July 4, 2026, storms and a heat wave disrupted the 250th anniversary of America’s independence. The severe weather left hundreds of thousands without power and led to record temperatures in various parts of the country.
Impact of the Storms and Heat Wave
In the Northeast, temperatures reached unprecedented levels. In New York, a storm caused extensive power outages during a heat wave. Central Park recorded a high of 98 degrees. Meanwhile, Atlantic City, New Jersey, set a new July temperature record at 105 degrees.
The extreme heat contributed to storms with wind gusts up to 70 mph in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, affecting train services and damaging numerous trees. Nearly one million people were left without electricity across states like Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Ohio, New York, and New Jersey. Restoration efforts involved hundreds of crew members from 12 states and Canada converging on Michigan to restore power.
Fireworks and Celebrations Affected
The violent storms led many cities to cancel Independence Day events or reschedule firework displays. In Belleville, New Jersey, Mayor Frank Velez prioritized resident safety over celebrations. Annapolis, Maryland, called off its parade and a performance by a Naval Academy band in anticipation of dangerous weather.
Philadelphia’s Independence Parade was canceled because of extreme heat. Even in Washington, D.C., storms led to temporary evacuations at the National Mall, where large Fourth of July festivities were planned.
D.C. Homeland Security and Emergency Management informed, “A severe thunderstorm is occurring near the National Mall. Seek shelter immediately. Do not wait.”
During the celebrations, an elderly woman suffered a heat-related condition and was taken to the hospital. Washington set a new record for the warmest low temperature at 84 degrees, with temperatures again approaching triple digits by noon on the Fourth.
Tragedy in Wisconsin
A family outing turned tragic in Wisconsin when a boat capsized on Geneva Lake during a storm, resulting in the deaths of three children. Six adults and a child were rescued, but the children recovered had not survived. All four children aboard were wearing life jackets.
The Geneva Lake Law Enforcement Agency and Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources are investigating. A privately owned motorboat carrying ten people was overwhelmed by severe conditions. Mayor Todd Krause declared an emergency after storm-related damage, including downed trees and power lines, affected the area.
