The Prefontaine Classic at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon showcased thrilling track and field events. Cooper Lutkenhaus, aged 17, led the 800 meters but Brandon Miller surged forward to win with a time of 1:43.68. Miller praised Lutkenhaus’ competitive spirit on Peacock broadcast, stating, “He’s an amazing competitor.”
The evening featured close finishes, with Wilma Nielsen narrowly beating Juliette Whittaker by 0.18 seconds in the 1,500 meters. Liam Murphy edged Stefan Nillessen by just 0.01 seconds in the men’s mile. Parker Wolfe dominated the men’s two-mile race.
Olympians shone as Valarie Sion won the women’s discus and Ethan Katzberg the hammer throw. In the pole vault, Sandi Morris triumphed over Katie Moon. Dejanea Oakley, fresh from dental surgery, added a win in the 400 meters following her NCAA championship victory.
Women’s 100-Meter Showdown
Reigning 100 and 200 world champion Melissa Jefferson-Wooden approaches this season gradually, with limited individual events. Competitors for Saturday’s 100 meters include Sha’Carri Richardson and Jamaican twins Tia and Tina Clayton. Heats will determine who advances to the final rounds.
Jefferson-Wooden expressed confidence, aiming to execute her races well, saying, “That’s the thing that has gotten me to where I am today.” Richardson won last year’s event.
Men’s 100-Meter Showdown
Kenny Bednarek and Noah Lyles had a rivalry in the 200 meters, culminating in a heated exchange at the U.S. championships. Lyles is absent for the 100 meters this Saturday, where Bednarek will face world champion Oblique Seville from Jamaica.
Other champions from the 2024 Paris Games include Cole Hocker in the Bowerman Mile, Faith Kipyegon in the women’s mile, and several others in various events.
The men’s 110 hurdles feature Ja’Kobe Tharp from Auburn, who set a world record last month at the NCAA championships.
