The U.S. team did not compete on Independence Day, but France, crucial in the American Revolutionary War, was on the field in Philadelphia facing Paraguay in a major Round of 16 match. The winner would advance to the quarterfinals.
Conditions were challenging due to the heat, making it tough for both teams. France, heavily favored and led by Kylian Mbappé, went up against a determined Paraguay team.
A stirring rendition of ‘America the Beautiful’ set the stage before the match.
During the first half, France dominated play, pressuring Paraguay’s defense. Tensions rose in the 35th minute when players from both teams engaged in a pushing match, sparked by Mbappé and Paraguay’s Andrés Cubas.
Though the intensity remained high, Paraguay managed to reach halftime with the score still 0-0, a notable achievement given the French team’s aggressive play.
France continued pressing in the second half. Mbappé came close to a breakaway score early in the period. Then, in the 67th minute, France received a penalty kick following a foul on Desire Doue reviewed by VAR. Mbappé converted the penalty, scoring the decisive goal and marking his 19th career World Cup goal.
After Mbappé’s goal, Paraguay’s resistance waned but they mounted a late effort, forcing France’s goalkeeper Mike Maignan into action just before time. Despite receiving three yellow cards, Paraguay continued their strategy to unsettle France, even engaging in post-match confrontations.
France’s victory sets up a quarterfinal clash with Morocco in Boston on Thursday.
