Wrigley Field, home to the Chicago Cubs for 112 years, encountered an unusual cluster of weather events during a game against the St. Louis Cardinals. On an eventful Saturday night, fans witnessed a 58-minute rain delay, a 15-minute fog delay, and a postgame fireworks show—a scenario possibly unprecedented at Wrigley Field.
The Cubs lost 3-0 to the Cardinals after the series of delays. Cubs All-Star center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong commented, “I’ve never seen anything like that. It was reminiscent of rec ball soccer from my childhood.”
A large thunderstorm created the initial delay before the game began. Once the rain cleared, the national anthem was performed with an expansive American flag in the outfield, and fog gradually enveloped the field. Visibility worsened, affecting gameplay. For example, Cardinals second baseman JJ Wetherholt hit a home run while visibility was diminishing, complicating typical game proceedings.
Dense fog led to a rare delay in the sixth inning as Ian Happ caught the final out. “It was playable and then, at some point, the upper deck disappeared,” said Cubs manager Craig Counsell. Players faced difficulty seeing the ball, prompting a temporary pause in the game. Spectators participated by singing John Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Roads” during the delay.
Once resumed, the game conditions improved, yet the Cubs’ offense faltered. They missed several scoring opportunities, going 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position and leaving eight runners on base.
Starting pitcher Shota Imanaga struggled, being pulled in the fifth inning after allowing a leadoff home run. The team’s pitching depth has been strained due to injuries, with 13 pitchers on the injured list.
Cubs Make Roster Changes
The Cubs signed right-hander Jake Woodford in an ongoing search for pitching reinforcement. Woodford, 29, previously played for the Milwaukee Brewers, possessing a 6.94 ERA this season. To accommodate him, the Cubs designated Bryse Wilson for assignment. Wilson faced difficulties in his last appearance, allowing seven runs over 3 1/3 innings.
Injury Updates
Matt Shaw, dealing with a left hand sprain, will not return until after the All-Star break and is currently not participating in baseball activities. Meanwhile, right-hander Jameson Taillon, recovering from a left hamstring strain, is scheduled for a rehab assignment.
