Every Fourth of July, fireworks light up the sky across Los Angeles, creating vibrant displays for spectators. However, these celebrations come with significant air quality concerns. Each fireworks display releases noxious gases, soot, and toxic metals, impacting the environment and public health.
Air Quality Concerns
The South Coast Air Quality Management District has warned of hazardous air pollution levels from 5 p.m. Saturday through 3 p.m. Sunday. This affects central and southern Los Angeles County, northern Orange County, and Riverside and San Bernardino counties. Northern Los Angeles County and southern Orange County may also experience unhealthy air quality.
Fireworks activity, combined with light winds, is expected to increase smoke levels, worsening air pollution from dusk on Saturday. Particulates from the celebrations will persist until dispersed by the wind on Sunday afternoon.
Health Impacts of Firework-Related Pollution
According to Los Angeles County Public Health, firework-related pollution can trigger health issues such as coughs, breathing difficulties, asthma flares, and heart attacks. The American Lung Association highlights that fireworks set off at home are even more detrimental due to their proximity to the ground, increasing the risk of cardiovascular problems.
The region’s air quality during July 4 and 5 is notoriously poor. This year, air quality concerns follow a recent warehouse fire in Boyle Heights, which significantly worsened local pollution levels.
Public Health Recommendations
To mitigate health risks, the L.A. County public health department advises reducing physical exertion and keeping doors and windows shut. As whole house fans and swamp coolers can draw pollutants inside, using air purifiers or air conditioners is recommended.
